Andre Rainey on the Fight for Shared Parenting in New York

Andre Rainey, former mayor of Peekskill, spent four years fighting for equal custody time with his daughter through the New York family court system, an experience that turned him into an advocate for statewide shared parenting legislation with the National Parents Organization. He talked with Jim about what a contested custody case looks like in Westchester, why he believes the current system incentivizes conflict, and Kentucky’s 2018 shared parenting law, which he says was followed by an 11 percent drop in family court filings. Rainey is hosting the Shared Parenting Conference on April 19th in Peekskill, with more than 30 advocacy organizations and two state legislators expected to attend.
